What does a Salesforce developer actually build?

A Salesforce developer builds Apex classes and triggers, Lightning Web Components, Flow automation, SOQL queries, REST and SOAP integrations, custom objects and fields, and the sharing model that decides who sees each record. The work is constrained by platform governor limits and a multi-tenant security model.

Buyers routinely price only the first half of that list. On the server side, Apex means classes, triggers, batch jobs, and the test classes that have to exist before anything can be deployed at all. Lightning Web Components are the front end. Flow is the declarative layer, and wherever logic can live there a competent team puts it there. Writing Apex for everything demonstrates a habit, not depth.

What decides the second year is the invisible half: SOQL that stays selective against objects holding millions of rows, triggers bulkified for a 200-record load, and field and record access enforced inside Apex, which defaults to system context. Two constraints frame all of it. Three platform releases land every year, so custom code is always written against a target that shifts underneath it, and the Well-Architected guidance holds that a team which neither plans for, audits nor remediates technical debt ends up with a poorly architected system. So the decision has to reach past the job title into what the person will actually be asked to build.

What changed for Salesforce development teams in 2026?

Five shifts land on a development team. DevOps Center is native and costs nothing. The permissions-in-profiles retirement was called off. Evaluate the code, not the team size. Twelve probes cover trigger design, test quality, bulkification, component choice, query selectivity, security enforcement, source control, static analysis, code review, sandbox strategy and AI provenance. The 75 per cent Apex coverage floor is a deployment gate, not a quality measure.

That last point is where buyers most often go wrong.
